Red Car Brewery and Restaurant

Red Car Brewery and Restaurant
1266 Sartori Ave
Torrance, CA 90501
(310) 782-0222

Congratulations to Red Car!
They were recently named the Best Brewpub by myfoxla's Hot List.

The Red Car Brewery and Restaurant was established in August of 2000 by co-owners and husband & wife Bob and Laurie Brandt. They've pursued their dream of good food and great beer ever since.

Their lunch and dinner menu is quite extensive and fun to explore, check it out at www.redcarbrewery.com.

The beers on tap are the Electra Lite, the Winsome Wheat, my favorite the South Bay IPA, the South Loop Porter, and Extra Special Bitter. Bob does put put some seasonals, so be on the look out for those also. To-go growlers always available. Enjoy.

Pizza Port San Clemente

Pizza Port
San Clemente

San Clemente, CA 92672

http://www.pizzaport.com

It’s Friday, near noon, and we’re heading south on the 405 Freeway. Why anyone would want to drive on this thing ANY morning is beyond me; but this morning is different because I’m on a mission. I’m heading to the newest Grub & Grog establishment in San Clemente, a little place named Pizza Port.
We arrive shortly and after a few quick snapshots of from the upstairs parking lot to commemorate the stunning coastal views we make our way inside. Bellying up to the “lunch counter” and perusing the menu for the day, I quickly realize that this day’s mission may quickly become mission impossible. Never let it be known though that I backed down from a challenge. After a quick tour of the facility and a little encouragement from our friendly bartender Doug we made our initial selections. Our breakfast beverages were placed before us and the mission had begun:

The menu for the day (descriptions courtesy of Pizza Port):

Amigo Lager: Very light. A thirst quenching Mexican lager traditionally served with a lime. Trestles Special Golden: Light bodied ale with a crisp lager like finish brewed with light crystal malt and 100% Liberty hops.

T-Street Wheat: Uses both Bavarian & American yeast strains, barley & wheat malt, finished with Liberty hops.

California Honey: Their lightest beer in color and body. Fresh California honey is added to the a golden ale for a crisp finish.

Poche Pale: A highly hopped American Pale Ale with just enough malt to balance out the brewer’s favorite hops, Amarillo & Tomahawk.

Carlsbad Chronic: A mellow amber malty ale. Imported from the Carlsbad location.
Sharkbite Red: A very robust American Red brewed with Centennial and Cascade hops. GABF Silver medal winner in 2000.

BC Brown Ale: A smooth full bodied brown lightly hopped with a hint of roasted barley for a nutty flavor.

El Camino IPA: Strong and hoppy. Dry hopped with Centennial and Cascade.
Pier Rat Porter: Thick, dark and smooth served on nitrogen for a creamy taste. Brewed with 5 different malts and 2 hops for a complex full bodied ale.

As you can see, if sampling was going to be done correctly I had a long day ahead. Starting light and ending with dark, both the day and the brews, was the plan of attack. Of course I’m happy to report: Mission accomplished!

Our favorites: While we did like them all our favorites by the were the Porter, IPA, Poche Pale. Don’t let the Poche fool you, it says it’s a Pale Ale, but it comes in more in the neighborhood of an IPA. The IPA brings what it promises. The Porter is superb! Along with the food, this brew makes the trip to Pizza Port well worth it.

We enjoyed our day of sampling very much and would like to thank Doug and Annie for taking great care of us. And a thanks to brewer Kirk McHale for his dedicated work.

Ein Steins Restaurant and Brewery

Unfortunately this brewery closed down a while back. It was one of our favorites and I was feeling a little nostalgic, so we thought we'd throw up an old post to remember the place.

EIN STEIN'S
Restaurant and Brewery, Inc
.
1301 Manhattan Avenue
Hermosa Beach, CA 90254
(310) 379-3943

Ein Steins beer are available in a Pilsner (12 oz), a Pint (16 oz), Linz (23 oz), Mast (33 oz), or Pitcher (60 oz).
A Beer Sampler is available. They also offer kegs (15.5 and 5 gallons). Cocktails also served.

Beers descriptions from their menu:
Cerveza Hermosa Cerveza Hermosa is our lightest-bodied ale. It is light gold in color and fairly low in bitterness. Cerveza Hermosa is, by design, a great patio beer. 4.4% ABV

Dayz Amber This American Amber Ale is medium-bodied ale and has a complex malty aroma and flavor. There is a healthy addition of Cascade hops at the end of the boil to magnify the malty floral aroma. 5% ABV

Proton Porter This robust porter will give all dark beer lovers a positive charge upon their first glance at this rich black ale. Proton Porter has a wonderfully complex chocolate and roasted flavor and a full body. Proton Porter uses the world renowned English Kent Goldings hops for medium hop bitterness. 6.4% ABV.

Hermosa's Heavenly Hefe (H3) This is our version of a classic unfiltered wheat beer (fifty percent of the grain used is wheat). H3 has a mild fruity flavor and a nice cloudy golden color. It's like Hefeweizen to the third degree. 4.6% ABV

Palmary Pale Ale This praiseworthy pale ale has a rich gold color, medium body, great hop flavor, and a clean crisp bittermess. Approx. 5.5% ABV.

E = IPA (Ecstacy = India Pale Ale) E = IPA is an intensely hopped ale that is copper in color. We use healthy doses of Columbus and cascade hops to generate a rich hop flavor in addition to a nice bitter finish, then we add a generous amount of Cascade hops at the end of the boil for a great floral aroma. E = IPA is like Palmary Pale Ale on steroids. Approx. 6.5% ABV.

Baptist Brown Where Ein Stein's now sits, a big, beautiful Baptist church once stood. Our Brown Ale has a medium body, slightly sweet chocolate malty flavor, and a sinfully smooth finish. 5.8% ABV.

Yo Mama's Mild Yo Mama's Mild is like the kid brother of the Baptist Brown. It is copper to brown in color and has a malty aroma and flavor that are enhanced by the addition of Grandma's Robust Molasses in the kettle. It is light in body and carbonation. Mama's Mild is a great beer for novice and professional dark beer drinkers alike. 4.2% ABV.

Black Hole Stout Black Hole Stout is an Irish Stout that has a pronounced roasted flavor, a creamy mouthfeel, and a dry, silky finish. You'll get lost in the smooth, dreamy texture of this flavorful ale. 4.4% ABV.

Double Vision Ale If you've never had a Belgian Ale you are in for a real treat. Double Vision Ale is a Belgian Double, which is probably one of the most flavorful beers made, and our ale is no exception. It is dark copper in color, with a very complex malty aroma and flavor. The yeast used to ferment the beer gives it a uniquely fruity flavor. 7.5% ABV.

Atomic Ale This is one of our brewer's favorite because it has a bold malty flavor that's kind of toasty with a nice alcoholic bite in the finish. This is a Strong Ale which, by definition, is any style of beer that is stronger than classic style guidelines, but at the same time is still in balance. Atomic Ale is basically an Amber Ale that got out of control. 6.8% ABV
